The March project for the ThReD and Needles sewing group might be my favorite so far! The group decided to use Michelle Obama as inspiration. There are so many adjectives to describe our first lady’s style. Words that come to mind are: classic, timeless, elegant, and daring. Who wouldn’t be inspired by her? Continue reading to see my inspiration and what I made…
There were so many looks from Mrs. Obama that the ladies from the ThReD and Needles group and I could draw inspiration. I chose this beautiful orange pantsuit as a starting point for my inspiration. Luckily, I had this beautiful orange, double cotton Halston fabric on hand. I purchased the fabric on sale for $4.80/yard from Fabric Mart.
I originally made the skirt as a high waist pleated skirt. The drape of the fabric did not do well with the construction. I wore it as a pleated skirt to church on Easter Sunday. The minute I got home, I immediately started ripping the seams apart! I used Simplicity pattern 2446 for the blazer. The skirt was made with New Look 6103. Instead of the curved waistband included with the pattern, I used a straight waistband to give the skirt a highwaist silhouette.
Ok, let’s talk about these buttons! As I mentioned, I made my outfit for Easter Sunday church service. I stayed awake until 4am working on the skirt and jacket. (I did not start on the skirt until midnight!) Nevertheless, I did not have buttons on hand that I wanted to use for the jacket. I purchased these handbag lock twist a long time ago for another project. In my foggy, tired brain, I chose to use the handbag buckles as buttons. I ran the risk of completely leaving holes in my blazer…but I had no other choice. End result, I was so pleased with the outcome. You can find the buckles HERE at Micheal Levine’s.
